IndyCar Toronto: O’Ward gana y mantiene el pulso a Palou, 12º tras un mal día estratégico

<p><a href="https://es.motorsport.com/driver/pato-o-ward/109473/">Pato O&#8217;Ward</a> se fue de la sesión clasificatoria del sábado en la IndyCar preguntándose cómo podría recuperar el ritmo perdido frente a los líderes en Toronto. A pocos minutos de la carrera del domingo, su equipo, responsable del coche #5 en Arrow McLaren, encontró la respuesta.</p>

<p>Con la presencia de Zak Brown, director ejecutivo de McLaren Racing, el mexicano realizó las paradas en boxes oportunas y aportó la velocidad necesaria cuando había que hacerlo para adjudicarse el GP de Toronto de este domingo. El resultado fue la segunda victoria del año para el de Monterrey, que llegó después de que hace una semana se adjudicara la primera manga de la doble cita de Iowa.</p>
<p>Las esperanzas de arrasar ese fin de semana en el óvalo corto se vieron truncadas por una inoportuna bandera amarilla tras una parada en boxes, en la recta final. Pero siete días más tarde, O&#8217;Ward sincronizó sus detenciones para hacerlas en el momento justo. &#8220;No puedo decir que lo viera venir&#8221;, admitió O&#8217;Ward. &#8220;Pero me sentía muy bien con el neumático duro durante todo el fin de semana. Nos costó un poco conseguir que el blando funcionara en clasificación&#8230; Pero sabía que tenía un gran coche para competir, y los chicos acertaron con la estrategia&#8221;.</p>
<p>Todo lo contrario que para <a href="https://es.motorsport.com/driver/alex-palou-2/42275/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Alex Palou</a>. El piloto español se la jugó con la estrategia junto a <a href="https://es.motorsport.com/team/chip-ganassi-racing/208/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chip Ganassi Racing</a>, siguiendo tanto él como <a href="https://es.motorsport.com/driver/scott-dixon/21774/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Scott Dixon</a> un plan de dos detenciones. Una sucesión de banderas amarillas aún con los primeros neumáticos, los duros, y la elección del blando para el segundo stint, que en Toronto prácticamente se desintegra, dejó al español en mitad del pelotón, P15. Tras varias duras batallas, pudo acabar duodécimo. No podrá conseguir su cuarto título la semana que viene en Laguna Seca, uno de sus circuitos predilectos, pero mantiene una renta de 99 puntos sobre el mexicano a 4 rondas del final (se dan 54 por carrera).</p>

<p>O&#8217;Ward fue uno de los cuatro pilotos que entraron en boxes en las primeras vueltas de la carrera, quitándose de encima los compuestos blandos de Firestone, que se degradaban rápidamente, y cambiando a los duros para el resto de la carrera. Momentos después, uno de los pilotos que paró &#8211;<a href="https://es.motorsport.com/driver/scott-mclaughlin-2/39999/">Scott McLaughlin</a>&#8211; perdió una rueda y se estrelló contra el muro, abandonando y provocando una amarilla.</p>
<p>Eso colocó al mexicano en la estrategia ganadora, y otra bandera amarilla por <a href="https://es.motorsport.com/driver/alexander-rossi/31265/">Alexander Rossi</a>, justo después de que se detuviera por segunda vez en la vuelta 29, le puso en primera posición. Avanzó en el tercer stint hasta situarse segundo tras <a href="https://es.motorsport.com/driver/rinus-veekay/833591/">Rinus VeeKay</a>, que seguía una estrategia de dos paradas. Cuando Veekay entró por última vez al final de la vuelta 57, O&#8217;Ward se quedó una vuelta más fuera y se puso en cabeza. A partir de ahí, todo fue coser y cantar. El piloto de 26 años se hizo con una cómoda victoria, aunque bajo bandera amrilla, ya que <a href="https://es.motorsport.com/driver/nolan-siegel/952792/">Nolan Siegel</a> y <a href="https://es.motorsport.com/driver/felix-rosenqvist-2/37139/">Felix Rosenqvist</a> chocaron a falta de tres vueltas.</p>
<p>El resto del podio fue para otros dos pilotos de estrategia a dos paradas. Veekay fue segundo, logrando su mejor resultado del año para <a href="https://es.motorsport.com/team/dale-coyne-racing/546/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Dale Coyne Racing</a>. <a href="https://es.motorsport.com/driver/kyffin-simpson/879349/">Kyffin Simpson</a>, de Chip Ganassi, fue tercero y consiguió su primer podio en la IndyCar.</p>
<h2>Otros incidentes destacables de la IndyCar en Toronto</h2>
<p><a href="https://es.motorsport.com/driver/colton-herta-2/41525/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Colton Herta</a>, que partía desde la pole, se conformó con la cuarta posición al final de la carrera. <a href="https://es.motorsport.com/driver/marcus-ericsson/32053/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Marcus Ericsson</a> y <a href="https://es.motorsport.com/driver/kyle-kirkwood/290721/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Kyle Kirkwood</a>, compañeros de equipo en Andretti Global, le siguieron en quinta y sexta plaza. Kirkwood tenía la esperanza de luchar por su tercera victoria consecutiva en un circuito urbano, pero pasó la mayor parte de la carrera del domingo remontando, después de que <a href="https://es.motorsport.com/driver/marcus-armstrong/445582/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Marcus Armstrong</a> le tocara y le hiciera trompear en la calle de boxes durante su segunda parada.</p>
<p><a href="https://es.motorsport.com/driver/graham-rahal/21869/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Graham Rahal</a>, <a href="https://es.motorsport.com/driver/callum-ilott/108935/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Callum Ilott</a>, <a href="https://es.motorsport.com/driver/david-malukas/451117/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">David Malukas</a> y Scott Dixon completaron el Top 10. Dixon, Malukas y Palou habían empezado la carrera con gomas duras, planeando una estrategia alternativa. Pero las innumerables banderas amarillas les condenaron.</p>
<p>Como viene siendo habitual en las rondas finales de la temporada, las banderas amarillas y la estrategia marcaron la carrera. Tras la primera, por el incidente de McLaughlin, en la vuelta 21, <a href="https://es.motorsport.com/driver/christian-rasmussen/947633/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Christian Rasmussen</a> tuvo un contacto con <a href="https://es.motorsport.com/driver/will-power/25961/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Will Power</a> y abandonó. Hubo más amarillas por Alexander Rossi y porque <a href="https://es.motorsport.com/driver/jacob-abel/955773/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jacob Abel</a> terminó encima del Chevrolet #2 de <a href="https://es.motorsport.com/driver/josef-newgarden/36117/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Josef Newgarden</a> después de una resalida.</p>
<p>Otra aparición del Pace Car en la segunda mitad de la prueba podría haber agitado las cosas de nuevo. Pero cuando la última bandera amarilla ondeó a falta de dos vueltas para el final, la carrera ya estaba decidida. La IndyCar volverá a la acción el 27 de julio para el Gran Premio de Monterey en Laguna Seca.</p>
